I’m not exactly sure where to begin with this restaurant
review. Usually we start with some
location information, maybe tell you about the decor, but this time I’m going
to start with the most important thing…This food was a HOT MESS! I mean terrible, awful, and a low down dirty
shame! Dishes came to the table cold,
chicken tasted like fish, the plates were smeared with food remains upon arrival
to the table. We are not even sure if
the smeared food was from the chef or leftovers from the dishwasher. All of the sauces used had a strange twang
and on top of all that they were out of mangos and sticky rice! What self
respecting Thai restaurant allows themselves to run out of mangos and stick
rice, are you kidding me?
The décor matched the food, dark, drab and boring. Nothing at all about the décor was noteworthy
or memorable. There were plain wooden tables and ordinary
yet slightly comfy chairs. The floors
were covered in carpet, which emitted an old, musty and repugnant odor. If there are any restaurant owners out there
reading this please, please, please do not place carpet on your restaurant
floor. There is not enough steam
cleaning in the world to make having carpet on a restaurant floor a good idea.
The service was surfacly polite. I say this because our waitress smiled
slightly while at the table but was inattentive. When present, she was able to help identify mystery
ingredients in our dishes. The food took
a long time to come out despite the fact that there were few customers in the
restaurant.
The restaurant is located in the heart of Old Town
Alexandria VA so the only parking options are street parking or garage
parking. The prices here would be
reasonable if the food was good. We feel
that this restaurant is unsuitable for anyone for any reason. In the words of my mother..”this place is not
fit for man nor beast.” Overall we give Sang
Jun Thai ♪ note, although we question if they are even worth of that.
Duck Spring Rolls
When our spring rolls arrived they were nestled on a
bed of carrot and cabbage curls which attempted to hide old food remains
encrusted on the plate. The duck inside
of the roll was cold and the spring roll wrap was not in the least bit
crispy. The brown sauce had the
strangest twang to it. We could not tell
if it was turning rancid or if someone had the awful idea to purposely create a
sauce that tastes like that. As if that
were not enough, the chef decided to spread a heavy dose of mustard on the
dish??? Note to self chefs, do not use
condiments to cover up your food mistakes.
Just do the right things and make your food tasty.
Eggplant with Chicken
So did you notice that the title of the dish is
eggplant and Chicken? C H I C K E N…why
did the C H I C K E N taste like fishy shrimp?
I called the waitress over and asked this very question. Her response was that the chef used shrimp
paste in my eggplant and C H I C K E N dish.
Humm…that explained everything. Epic
fail people, epic fail! If that were not
enough, the dish was too salty; beat us while were down why don’t you!
Crispy Duck
Ok, the chef
almost got it right this time. He cooked
the duck in a wonderful light and fluffy tempura batter. He then ruined it with a yucky heavy sauce that
made the crispy tempura soggy and limp.
Tear drop…tear drop…
