Stuggys Overall Review

Stuggy’s is a quaint store front hot dog shop in the heart of Fells Point MD.  They boast a large selection of hot dogs and sausages with tons of toppings.  Stuggy’s offers specialty dogs or you can create your own special concoction.  Stuggy’s is open 7 days a week.  They have late night hours till 3am Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Stuggy’s is a good option for late night dining on the weekends or a fun place for kids to experiment with creating crazy dogs during the day.  The food is tasty and fun.  Parking is an issue as you have to pay for parking on the street.  Overall we give Stuggy's ♪♪ and a half note.

The Wild Thing

This dog consisted of a Bison sausage (we choose to switch it to venison) topped with blue cheese sauce and diced onions, to which Angela added sauteed mushrooms and bacon.  This turned out to be a very delicious and robust sausage.  The blue cheese complimented to super gamey flavor of the sausage.  It was a little hard to eat as there were lots of yummy things piled on top.

The Crab Mac

This was a regular Stuggys' dog topped with mac and cheese and back fin crab meat.  I made a special request to have this without the bread so they cut the dog into bite size pieces and put it in a bowl with the mac and cheese and crab meat.  The mac and cheese was not bad but not great either and the crab meat was a nice addition.  This was fun treat.

Garlic Parmesan Cheese Fries

The first thought that comes to our mind about these fries is "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark."  That something are these fries.  They were dry, powdery and chalky tasting.  After much debate Angela and I have decided to at least agree that these fries are very strange.  Angela believes that the cheese is what made them so powdery and sort of gummy.  Melissa believes that something went awry in the cooking process that dried them out and made them moisture-less.  Either way they were miserable little fries that you need to steer clear of.

Angela's Review

Stuggy’s in Fells Point sells “old fashioned hot dogs and sausages with a modern twist.” In addition they sell sides such as chili fries, cheese fries, Stuggy’s chili, mac and cheese, slaw and sweets like Berger cookies (only made here in Maryland) and fried Oreo cookies. This is a small storefront eatery with just enough room for the kitchen, a counter and 3 or 4 barstools for patrons to sit looking out at the square, two walls with chalkboards on which the menu is depicted in what has the look of colored chalk and Boylan fountain sodas, a specialty brand not usually seen in fountain form and with such flavors as crème and black cherry. I was excited to see black cherry as that is not one you see every day. I decided to try the wild thing, which is described on the menu as Bison Sausage, blue cheese and diced raw onions. I decided to try it with Venison sausage replacing the Bison sausage that is listed and added sautéed mushrooms and bacon. It was really good. I did not enjoy as much the garlic parmesan fries which had a sort of dry, powdery consistency. As you, our readers know, this is not the sort of place we frequent but we do like to try them out from time to time and when we do we like to share them with you. This was definitely a unique experience… in a fun way. I can definitely see being compelled late at night (or in the wee hours of the morning, as the case may be, as they are open till 3 Thursday through Sunday) on a weekend to go grab one of these “designer dogs,” as I now like to call them. If you decide to try it out… or have tried it out before… Bon Appetite. I give Stuggy's ♪♪ and a half note just for novelty of it… and the good hot dogs and sausages of course.

What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear the phrase “Gourmet Hot Dogs in Baltimore”?  Stuggy’s in Fells Point will now be your response.  Stuggy’s is a tiny little store front shop that serves all kinds of creative hot dogs and sausages.  Many of them have high falootin toppings like crab meat, blue cheese, and sautéed mushrooms.  They have specialty dogs you can order.   For the culinary astute individuals, one can create your own dog.  I especially love the fact that they have all kinds of dogs/sausages.  They have a wild game dog, with your choice of venison or bison.  For the record, the wild game dog is DELICIOUS!  There are endless options available that are sure to please any hot dog lover.  If you are out late downtown and want to grab a bite on the weekend, Stuggy’s is a great option.  This is a great spot to take the kids early in the day.  Word of caution, be careful after dark.  You will have to weave around all the stinkin drunk folks.  Angela and I watched a drunken guy almost knock over the refrigerated display while he was attempting to drop it like it was hot.  It was not cute.  The store is super small and gets very crowded.  I recommend that you grab your dog and eat it outside in plaza area.  Stuggy’s is a fun little dive that you need to try.  Overall I give Stuggy’s ♪♪ and a half note.

Alizee Overall Review

Alizee is located in the Inn at the Colonnade across from John Hopkins University.  This restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; it offers American cuisine.  The website boasts that it is available for private parties and special events.  There is free parking underneath the hotel/apartment.  Just make sure you get your ticket validated. If you wanted to go to this restaurant, you could go with anyone really, a friend, a family member, a coworker; but I would say that if you want to eat out there are plenty of other places to go. Overall, we give Alizee and a half note.

Smoked Salmon & Creme Fraiche

The salmon was rolled and topped with Creme Fraiche.  It had a typical strong smoked flavor.  The Creme Fraiche was light and creamy and had a subtle lemon flavor that was deeply overpowered by the salmon.  The bagel crisps were light and not a bad touch.  Overall the dish was not very exciting or creative.

Prosciutto Wrapped Fresh Mozzarella

Once again the chef rolled prosciutto, this time he stuffed the rolls with mozzarella.  Unfortunately, this dish was served warm.  By cooking the prosciutto, it caused the meat to be dry and tough.  It also changed the flavor of the prosciutto.  It made it salty and stale tasting. Much like the salmon it was served on a bed of unnecessary greens with shredded cheese on top.

Seafood Risotto

Thank God for the seafood risotto.  This dish saved our dining experience here in this restaurant.  Honestly we were afraid that the chef was going to mess this dish up. However he did quite the opposite.  The rice was cooked to perfection, firm with a slight bite.  There was a light seafood broth and tons of shrimp, crab and mussels.  This dish was amazing!

Diver Scallops

Poached/steamed/boiled scallops sat atop a bed of couscous.  These poor scallops were mistreated in this dish.  They had no flavor and were far from exciting.  They actually were slightly bitter.  The couscous was cooked well and had a nice flavor.

Mango Mousse Cake

This was yet another surprise.  This two layered cake was delicious.  The mousse was light and fluffy and perfectly matched the fluffiness of the cake.  The mousse flavor was not an artificial one.  It was very fresh and yummy.

Chocolate Cake

The chef created a super rich chocolate cake covered in chocolate ganache.   It was heavy, rich and delicious.  It was just like eating a chocolate bar.  DELICIOUS!

Alizee is a very interesting restaurant, located inside what are both a hotel and a residence; The Inn at the Colonnade. I do not think that I have ever seen any restaurants in the Baltimore area that are located in such a setting, though it might be quite common in other, bigger cities, I don’t know. The décor is of the kind I am fond; dark, heavy woods with accent colors of cream, brick red and lighter browns, with lots of natural light throughout, though I am sure from what I can see of the in-house lighting, that at night it is probably a bit more dimly lit and intimate. The food here is a bit hit or miss, but not ridiculously so. When the chef is on, he is on, but when he is off, he is just slightly off. I really enjoyed his seafood risotto, and his desserts are TO DIE FOR. However, I was not all that impressed with his prosciutto wrapped- mozzarella (which I USUALLY love), as he did not seem to know what to do with it. Prosciutto, when wrapped around mozzarella, is best not cooked, but here, it was cooked, which made it rather tough and dry… not good.  Nor was I all that impressed with the diver scallops as they were sort of dry, and were missing that really important char( that only occurs when scallops are placed in an appropriately piping hot pan) that I believe scallops should always have in such dishes.  All in all, I give Alizee ♪ and a half note.

Melissa's Review

Alizee was truly a 50/50 restaurant.  There were some great dishes and some barely ok dishes.  The atmosphere was fair.  Alizee is a restaurant located in a hotel/apartment community.  The restaurant was decorated with red, orange and brown.  It had rather dark lighting, and there were whimsical paintings on the wall.  The restaurant was completely empty when we first arrived.  Slowly a few more patrons trickled in.  The chef’s most memorable dishes were the seafood risotto and his desserts.  I am a huge fan of great risotto and this chef managed to create a risotto with a perfect texture.  It was creamy and rich with a great bite and the perfect amount of sauciness.  His desserts were tasty and extremely well executed.  His appetizers were poor and unimaginative.  Both his smoked salmon and his prosciutto appetizers were presented in the exact same way and neither was remarkable.  Honestly they were quite forgettable.  The chef managed to make scallops that were boring and limp.  Scallops have to be seared at a high temperature to get the natural sugar in them released.  It’s that sugar that causes the scallops to caramelize on the edges and taste super sweet.  The scallops this chef prepared appeared to be steamed or boiled.  They had no flavor at all.  Alizee was not a great restaurant.  I doubt that I would ever go back.  Overall I give Alizee ♪ and a half note.
