Ok, so Niwana is a Japanese/Korean restaurant. Now usually, when you walk into a restaurant and see people of the nationality whose food that establishment serves up sitting there eating, you figure that the food must be decent to very good. Well clearly the people there either had never eaten authentic Japanese or Korean food, or knew what to order and what not to. Since there were quite a few people there who appeared to be Korean, I am going with the latter. I was very excited when Melissa first said we should try this restaurant out as I LOVE trying out new restaurants that serve these types of food, and once I looked at the menu I was uber excited. Perhaps I should have remembered that rule of thumb that tells you in advance that you might not want to eat somewhere, and that is this, if you’ve never heard it before, remember it from here on out, “If a restaurant has a menu that is 35 pages long and encompasses all kinds of cooking styles… run in the other direction.” Now though this may not be so in all cases, in this case, we should have taken the hint. The food here was among the worst food I have ever eaten, bar none, not just the worse Japanese food. Anytime the best dishes you have are the best because they are slathered in some sort of sauce THAT is a problem.
The service was wanting. In the beginning our waiter came back to our table at least 5 times to check on us, which was not needed, but at the end, when we did need him, he was nowhere to be found, and when we did catch a glimpse of him, it did us no good to try and flag him down as he was never looking in our direction. When he finally came over at the end, he tried to give us our bill, but we asked to see the dessert menu instead as we were considering trying it. He says sure and 10 minutes later, he still was not back with it, so we decided to fore-go dessert and just take our bill. This time, a fellow customer had to grab his arm and point to us to get him to come over, and when he did come over, clearly he had completely forgotten that just minutes ago we had asked to see the dessert menu, as evidenced by the fact that he came over, handed us the bill without even apologizing for taking so long or even inquiring as to whether we had changed our minds about dessert. They need to get it together.
Clearly, as you can tell from our individual reviews, we agree on many of the aspects of this experience that were bad. I too have to give this place one ♪, and that’s only because we don’t have negative notes.
